First Things First

Before you ever load a round or pull a trigger, it’s important to know the basic firearm types and what makes each one unique. As an example, handguns fall into two main categories – revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.

Revolvers are the iconic “wheel guns,” like the Colt Peacemaker or Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum often seen in movies. They use a rotating cylinder to hold cartridges, and each pull of the trigger brings the next round into position. Revolvers are simple, rugged, easy to use and maintain, and are timeless in design.

Semi-automatic pistols — such as the Glock 19 or Sig Sauer P320— use energy from each fired round to eject the casing and load the next from a magazine. They offer higher capacity and faster reload.

Automatic and semi-automatic aren’t the same thing! Fully automatic firearms, which fire continuously if you hold the trigger, are highly regulated and not available for general public sale.

Shotguns and Long Guns

The shotgun is one of the most versatile firearms ever made. They are used for hunting, sport shooting, and home defense. Instead of a single bullet, most shotgun shells contain multiple pellets (or “shot”) that spread out upon firing.

Shotguns are measured by gauge rather than caliber. The 12-gauge is the most popular, followed by the 20-gauge for those who prefer lighter recoil. Pump-action shotguns like the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are durable and easy to use as well as maintain.

Semi-automatic shotguns offer quicker follow-up shots and smoother handling. And Pawn World has an extensive selection of shotguns for sport, hunting, and home defense.

Rifles are designed for precision and power and are perfect for hunting or long-range target shooting. The rifled barrel — with spiral grooves inside — spins the bullet for improved accuracy.

Common rifle types include bolt-action rifles such as the Ruger American or Remington 700, ideal for hunters and marksmen. Lever-action rifles, like the Winchester 94, is the classic cowboy favorite. Semi-automatic rifles, including the AR-15 platform, is widely used for sport shooting and defense due to their modular design.

Learn The Lingo

Caliber refers to the bullet’s diameter and is usually expressed in inches (.22, .45) or millimeters (9mm). It affects accuracy, recoil, and stopping power.

A .22 caliber rifle is lightweight, affordable to shoot, and perfect for beginners. A 9mm pistol offers manageable recoil and plenty of defensive punch. A .45 ACP provides heavier impact but a bit more recoil and as a result requires strength to control.

If all of this all of this seems confusing and overwhelming, no worries. Pawn World’s knowledgeable team can help you find the best caliber for your comfort, intended use, and experience level.

Buying a firearm isn’t like picking up a new set of golf clubs. It comes with a serious responsibility. That’s why it pays to work with a trusted, federally licensed dealer like Pawn World.
